I don’t laugh easily. It’s either out of obligation or embarrassment.
But what’s worse is that I rarely laugh while watching TV, sitcoms, slap stick, sharp wit…zero reaction. It’s not as if I don’t get the joke. In fact, I am so tuned in you’ll notice I almost never blink. Er, sometimes I am SO engaged in the proceedings of the idiot box, I forget to shut my trap.
Anyhow, so this non-haha mode of mine bugs my better half like crazy. Coz his thing is, after practically every single joke, the man cracks up like a 12-year-old and then turns around expecting me to reciprocate with a similar ‘Yeah, man, I am right there with you-haha’. Well, what do you know? It’s a no-go. I just can’t do it. Sometimes I am compelled to dole out a forced pity laugh with a pained frown on my brow. Now that niggles him all the more.
‘What’s wrong with you?’ he quizzes with a traumatized look (The kind I give when someone says they didn’t care for Lord of the Rings) that reeks with a dreadful mix of shock and disbelief.
How would I know? I thought this is perfectly normal. I mean, in my head, I am in splits. I can even feel my laugh muscles do a dance. It just doesn’t always translate in the kind of conventional manner most people are accustomed to.
But my husband, he was expecting us to be a Beavis & Butt-head. 😛 Never mind, a Joey and Chandler, we shall always be. 😉
